To date, Waldmann is the only manufacturer to fulfill the strict criteria of standard-compliant lighting as defined in the new ISO 3664:2009 standard with the fluorescent lamp PRESS + PROOF in the color proofing systems ALAE 436 and ALAE 536. The Waldmann systems used by OEM partners recently became the first to be certified by FOGRA. This marks the first time that a completely correct color balance is possible, ensuring the best quality in the world throughout the entire production process of the graphic and printing industry and thus, among other things, eradicating any discrepancies between proof and print.

Villingen-Schwenningen, April 2010. Together with the lighting manufacturer Osram, Herbert Waldmann GmbH & Co. KG – OEM partner for the printing industry for manufacturers such as Heidelberger Druckmaschinen – developed the fluorescent lamp PRESS + PROOF. This is the first lamp to comply with the standard lighting conditions as defined in ISO 3664:2009. The new version of ISO 3664:2009 standardizes visual color matching in the graphics industry for pre-press and printing. Thus, it sets the inspection conditions for color proofing applications. The requirements have become more demanding, particularly in the field of UV radiation, due to increasing metameric problems caused by the increased use of fluorescent materials. The PRESS + PROOF lamps, developed especially for the Waldmann color matching systems, are the first ones to fully comply with the strict lighting standards.

Color proofing systems: Lighting quality is vital
The lighting source is the heart of the color proofing system that is subjected to high demands, particularly in printing and graphics industries. The necessary lighting quality is described in ISO 3664 2009: The aim is to produce a light that resembles the CIE standard lighting D50 of around 5,000 K as closely as possible. The defined values, such as the special color reproduction indices Ri, the metameric indices in the visible MIVIS and ultraviolet MIUV ranges, or the maximum permissible color location deviation, must be adhered to at the location of color proofing, i.e., in the application. The new Waldmann PRESS + PROOF lamp was thus specially developed for this application and certified in Waldmann systems according to ISO 3664:2009. The lamp fulfills the application requirements of the new ISO standard with MIVIS <= 1.0 and MIUV <= 1.5. An excellent color reproduction of Ra > 95 and a color tolerance of Δ u´v´< 0.005 complete the high output of PRESS + PROOF.

Light and error sources: Standardized color balance reduces errors
Paper structures and bleaches in papers can simulate color differences. The environment is reflected in the color by glossy, pearl, lotus or metallic effects. Proofs are based on different printing processes with various printing inks and color pigments. The metameric phenomenon represents considerable error potential. Metameric colors that resemble each other under one lighting type suddenly reveal considerable color differences in changed lighting conditions. A standardized visual color balance is thus the only possibility to resolve discrepancies between proof and print. Incomprehensible error sources in the production process can only be balanced in this way.
