HEALTHY LIGHT - HUMAN CENTRIC LIGHTING
BIODYNAMIC LIGHT VTL
WHY BIODYNAMIC LIGHT?
Getting up. By car or public transport to work. A lot of time at work. Off home. Going to a restaurant, the gym, visiting friends or family. We are almost always indoors. All day long. Especially in the darker season. And we feel that.
Because we need light. Evolutionarily, we are accustomed to a life with a lot of time outdoors. Besides social influences, light decisively determines our day-night rhythm. It clocks our inner clock, the circadian rhythm. And while daylight has around 10,000 lux even on dull days, we are surrounded by 500 lux indoors with conventional artificial lighting when things are going well. We are in biological darkness. We lack the positive effect of daylight and its dynamics.
This aspect is corrected by biodynamic light, also known as Human Centric Lighting. It focuses on people and their natural lighting needs. In addition to visual aspects, it also takes into account emotional and biological aspects of light. Based on daylight, it dynamically changes light colour and illuminance during the course of the day. It provides the right light at the right time according to the respective living or working situation.
WHY BIOLOGICALLY EFFECTIVE LIGHT FROM WALDMANN?
Waldmann is one of the pioneers in the field of biologically effective lighting. Since 2004, we have been implementing projects with our VTL (VISUAL TIMING LIGHT) lighting management system for biodynamic lighting. Initially in care, since 2014 with office lighting and since 2019 also in industrial environments. We are able to do this thanks to holistic planning and our broad product portfolio, with which biodynamic lighting can be implemented according to the respective specific applications.
WHAT EFFECTS DOES LIGHT HAVE?
Light always has an effect. Visually, emotionally and biologically. Light influences our biorhythm. Sufficient light during the day promotes healthy sleep the following night. Darkness at night is also important here. During the day, light with sufficient intensity and cold white spectral content promotes alertness, activity and performance. A sufficiently large difference between light during the day and darkness at night stabilises the circadian rhythm. In the evening, cold white light can negatively influence the circadian rhythm: the result can be restless sleep and a lack of sleep the following day. Electronic devices such as smartphones and tablets also have an influence here.
The extent to which light has a non-visual effect depends largely on colour temperature, illuminance and timing.Natural light during the day and no light at night are ideal for health.
THE RIGHT LIGHT AT THE RIGHT TIME
- Increased performance
- Increased concentration
- Restful sleep
- Increased well-being
- Strengthening of the biorhythm
MISSING LIGHT OR WRONG LIGHT IMPULSES
- Sleep deprivation
- Lack of concentration
- Lack of synchronisation of the internal clock

LIGHT IN INTERACTION WITH THE HORMONES
Cortisol and melatonin levels of the body in a typical course of the day.
In the morning
In the morning, the hormone cortisol is produced in the body. It stimulates the metabolism and programs the body for daytime operation. The first morning light suppresses the production of the sleep hormone melatonin. VTL supports the activity of the stress hormone cortisol at the beginning by stimulating cold-toned light and high illuminance levels.
In the course of the day, the hormone cortisol is continuously reduced in the body. Nevertheless, good performance is still possible around midday. For VTL, this means continuing to provide mainly activating cold-tone light and rather high illuminance levels.
In the afternoon, the body's production of cortisol has already decreased significantly and the active work phase is coming to an end. The production of the sleep hormone is not yet desired at this time. VTL supports this transitional period with a neutral mixed light. The illuminance is gradually reduced.
The hormone melatonin makes us tired and reduces activity in favour of a good night's sleep. With biodynamic lighting during the day, melatonin levels are correspondingly high at night. The person sleeps well and is rested and productive the next day. VTL accompanies the transition to the rest phase by reducing brightness and relaxing warm-tone light.
The more daylight that can be used, the better.
Light distribution according to nature's model (blue sky, not the sun, large-area light): large-area from above and from the front. Large-area luminaires, use the upper third of the wall or ceiling as secondary reflectors.
iodynamic light pattern (light colour and illuminance) with adaptation to time of day. Daylight white lighting activated (> 5,300 Kelvin), warm white light relaxed (</= 3,000 Kelvin)
Melanopic-effective lux is measured at eye level (cyl. illuminance). A cirdadian effect is perceptible from 18 lx cool white. An effectively dimensioned lighting system achieves at least 240 melanopic lux (mel lx).
Holistic planning includes not only the right light colour but also consideration of the colours of surfaces, rooms and objects.
